Mediasite Tech Tip of the Day: Link Any of the Player Graphics to Specific URLs

2010 January 28

As Mediasite continues to evolve, it can be hard to keep up with all the things Mediasite can do for you to make your life easier. I stumbled onto one such example in a conversation with a customer, who was delighted to learn of it. What is it? It has to do with the ability to link player graphics.

In our Mediasite Players, you can link player graphics to the URL of your choice. So, if you want to link the banner graphic to a URL, you can do that. If you want to link the “This presentation has ended” graphic to a URL, you can. In fact, you can replace default graphics with your own graphics. You might change that “presentation has ended” graphic to read, “Thanks for watching! Click on this slide to help us improve by answering a brief, two-minute survey” Or you might send them to take a test in your LMS.

I thought a short conversation with Shane Tracy, our Director of Training and Events, would help you understand this feature better, as well as the steps to follow. See the brief, two-minute presentation below.

Note: The Silverlight player treats some of the graphics differently, so not all graphics are as linkable as those in the Classic Mediasite Player.

Finally, if you are on an earlier version of Mediasite (e.g., still on 4.3) and looking for other features or reasons to upgrade, check out our upcoming webcast this Friday called, Upgrading from Mediasite 4.x to 5.3: Why Make the Move Now?

Hope you can make it!

Yes! There are a couple ways to do it.

The first is the easiest, and works in later versions of the Mediasite Player: for presentations that have the share button enabled (looks like an envelope), just pause the presentation where you want it to start playing from, click on the share button and check the box that says “Start Time,” then send. The presentation will automatically start playing from that point.

The second is for earlier versions and requires a wee bit of math: navigate to your chosen slide, pause and then determine the play back time in milliseconds. So for your example, Slide 10 begins at 5 minutes 51 seconds into the presentation, which equals 351,000 milliseconds. Here’s a calculator site that helps. Then you append this bit of code to the end of the presentation URL: &playfrom=351000. For your example, it looks like this: http://atsvid.uthscsa.edu/mediasite/Viewer/?peid=13a51ae5f17f4b449f3e878035c9e63f&playfrom=351000

        Happy bookmarking!

P.S. You can also go in and add chapters to a presentation once it is captured. Another great way to navigate, but we’ll save that for a future post.

Thanks for the tip, John! I was at UNLEASH and found the entire conference very informative. I think it’s great that you can make an embedded-player graphic an active URL link. This, I think, gives producers more options when developing presentations.

      Hi,

Is it possible to disable the link on the e-mail icon that allow anyone to send invitation ?
How can I disable that link ?
      Thanks for your answer.

        Hi Raphael,

Yes it is possible, but at the server level. Call tech support and we can help you through that.

Also, keep in mind that regardless of whether someone shares a link, it is always protected by your security model. That is, if you have set up permissions to limit the audience of that presentation, only those allowed will be able to see it – even if someone else gets the link. You’re safe whether that share icon is available or not.

        I hope this helps!

Good tip! Another link trick is that you can also link from the presenter’s name to a bio or other webpage to see more about them. This is a feature in the presenter’s page when you edit it called “Bio URL”. We used that on a public webinar in September 2009 here: http://media.qad.com/qad/Viewer/?peid=68d504e1dbfd44119bc5abfd277bfef5
